[edit] Flashcards

Column 1 Column 2 (memorize)
What is the distinguishing feature(s) of the cervical cord? It is the widest segment because of the large amount of white matter and large ventral horn.
What is the distinguishing feature(s) of the thoracic cord? It has the highest ratio of white matter to gray matter.
What is the distinguishing feature(s) of the lumbar cord? It has the highest ratio of gray matter to white matter. There is a lot of gray matter because of the lumbar enlargement (due to motor neurons and interneurons to the legs).
What is the significance of the sulcus limitans? It separates the alar (sensory) and basal (motor) plate.
How are the afferents organized in the spinal cord? The afferents from the dorsal medial septum outwards are: sacral, lumbar, lower thoracic, upper thoracic, and cervical (meaning that the axons leave/enter on the area connected to the dorsal horn).
Afferent Sensory (afferent connection arrives and an efferent connection exits.)
Efferent Motor (afferent connection arrives and an efferent connection exits.)
